Fall is in the air

Henry, Rose and Penelope are enjoying some mangel beet tops.    We planted a row of these huge fodder beets for our pigs.  Now the roots are stored in the basement waiting to be fed to the animals in winter. By spring Rose and Penelope along with Eleanor will all have a nice family of piglets for us.  The handsome Henry will be the father.

Eggmobile!

We have certainly entertained our neighbours with this one!   The plan is to have it done by Friday because the broiler chicks and turkey poults need the pen that the pullets are currently in. What’s an eggmobile?  It is a portable laying hen barn that can be moved from field to field to keep the hens on fresh grass and use their natural insect eating and fertilizing ability to our benefit.   It is made with a mesh floor that can be covered with plywood and bedding in winter.   Lots of windows will let...

When at the market a week ago many people asked if my bread was gluten free. The question confused me since all bread made with wheat, rye, barley, spelt, kamut and the other usual grains contains gluten. It has to in order for the bread to rise. Do people mean no gluten added? Do people mean easier to digest gluten or low in gluten? Did the book Wheat Belly prompt a gluten restrictive diet?
